Playing Anomaly Agent put me through a rollercoaster of emotions and I’m still not quite sure whether or not I actually enjoyed playing it. When I first saw screenshots and trailers for the game, I was pretty much immediately hooked. It looked like a somewhat slower paced take on the side-scrolling beat’em up action of Katana Zero with a similar neon-infused visual style and some dope electronic music. Playing for a few minutes was enough to tell that this was indeed the vibe that Anomaly Agent was going for. However, there are some fundamental differences, that set this game apart from games like Katana Zero.
Step by step, you unlock a wide range of abilities to deal with your enemies. It starts fairly traditional with beating up bad guys with your fists while dodging or parrying attacks. Soon enough, your arsenal of attacks is enriched by all kinds of gadgets that you can use in battle. Initially, I thought this was pretty cool. Even though I love Katana Zero, I have to admit that it is fairly limited in terms of gameplay variety. You have your sword to attack and deflect. You can turn back time and use items that lie around in the environment. That’s it. In this game however, you have a million ways to deal with any given situation. Unfortunately, this led to me being overwhelmed by the sheer number of abilities. To make this clear, let me give you an overview of all the ways in which you can approach a battle situation.
