Vue comme une ville peu américaine où les codes se mélangent sans néanmoins déboucher sur un melting pot, la Nouvelle-Orléans filmique fournit une toile de fond fascinante pour des fictions filmiques susceptibles de remettre en question l’image romantique archétypale du Sud antebellum.Cet article examine deux personnages féminins qui mettent à mal la vision pastorale du « Vieux Sud », enracinée dans les romans de plantation du XIXe siècle dans Jezebel de William Wyler (L’Insoumise, 1938), et dans The Flame of New Orleans (La Belle Ensorceleuse, 1941), réalisé par René Clair au cours de son exile aux Etats-Unis pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
